On December 31, 1862 at the battle of Stones River, Tenn. he sustained a severe wound to the right arm, resulting in its amputation.  On April 21, 1863 he was discharged as a result of his wounds.  On August 6, 1863 he enlisted in the Veterans Reserve Corps and was finally discharged on August 15, 1866.

Other interesting information discovered:

Edward Pepper was born in Ireland in 1830 and had emigrated to the US by 1860.  On May 13, 1863 he was granted an invalid’s pension.  Two years after his death in 1895 his widow, Catherine, began to collect a widow’s pension.  In 1890 he listed his residence as being on Third Street in Cardington, Ohio.
