88th OVI: This Regiment was originally organized of a Battalion of four Companies organized at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio from September 24 to October 29, 1862 to serve three years and designated, “First Battalion Governors Guard.”
Six new Companies were organized at Camp Chase from July 24 to August 3, 1863 to serve three years and consolidated with this Battalion and designated the 88th Ohio Volunteers. It mustered out of service July 3, 1865.
This Regiment was principally engaged in the guarding of Rebel prisoners at Camp Chase. It was also engaged in the pursuit of Morgan’s Raiders and the suppression of the Holmes County Rebellion July 1863.
Other interesting information discovered:
James Madison Sherman was born on 7/23/1845. He had two brothers who all served in the Civil War: Fortunatus Sherman served in the 96th OVI Company C and Amos Sherman served in the 18th OVI, 2nd Battalion Company A. He was married three times: On 12/15/1864 Madison married Tracy Howell in Morrow County, no children were born of this marriage and it is unknown how the marriage ended. Madison married Almina Deborah “Minnie” Campbell in Morrow County on 7/29/1864, eight children were born of this union. Minnie died in 1907. Madison then married Juanita Simpson in Erie County, Ohio on 11/11/1909, no children were born of this union. Madison lived and farmed in the Morrow County and Crawford County area all his life. Sometime after 1910 he moved to the Erie County, Ohio area. He collected an invalid’s pension on 7/16/1890.
