Battles in which he fought:
On the seventh of May, 1864 the Regiment was ordered to Cumberland, Maryland via Parkersburg, WVa. It remained at Cumberland until the sixth of June when it moved to Washington City, proceeding to the White House. The Regiment did not disembark, but proceeded immediately to City Point. Here it aided in pontooning the river and in building roads, and on the 17th of June was engaged in a skirmish with the enemy near Point Walthall. For seventy days the Regiment forced a portion of the advanced lines operating on Richmond, ad was engaged in intrenching and picket day. It was mustered out on August 31, 1864 on expiration of service.
The 1890 Veterans Schedules of the US Federal Census reveal that Daniel Spear also served in the Kansas 8th Regiment, Company E for one year, five months and twelve days. He was discharged on 2/28/1863.
On November 14, 1864 records reveal he enlisted through Cincinnati for ten months through the Naval Rendenzvous and was discharged 0n 9/23/1865
Other interesting information discovered:
Daniel Spear was born in Massachusetts in June 1830. He was employed as a boatman while he was living in Massachusetts. In the 1870 census he is found living in Cardington and was employed as a drayman which is described as a person who delivers beer for a brewery. He married Emily M Woods on 5/13/1871. No children were born of this union. The 1900 census show Daniel living in Cardington with Frank and Della Gibson.
