Discharged on June 20, 1862 on surgeon’s certificate of disability.

Reenlisted on January 27, 1864 and was assigned to the 2nd. Regiment of Heavy Artillery, Co. L

Final discharged on June 22, 1865 on a surgeon’s certificate of disability at Nashville, Tennessee.

Battles in which he fought:

While his regiment was at the battles of Fort Donelson and Shiloh during his term of service, Bassager stated that he was never engaged in any battle.  He may not have been well enough to join his regiment for those battles.

Other interesting information discovered:

The 20th. regiment lost during service 2 Officers and 87 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 4 Officers and 267 Enlisted men by disease. Total 360.

The 2nd. Heavy Artillery Regiment lost during service 1 Officer and 2 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 170 Enlisted men by disease. Total 176.

John Bassager was born in Switzerland.  He became a naturalized citizen in 1868
