Battles in which he fought:

The 85th OVI organized at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio between May and June 1862 to guard a large number of Rebel prisoners. Soldiers mustered out between September 23 and September 27, 1862 at expiration of service.

Other interesting information discovered:

Sylvanus Winchester Payne was born in Westfield Township, Morrow County, Ohio in 1833. He married Emma A Maxwell in Morrow County on 9/24/1857, three children were born of this union.  Sylvanus was a farmer while living in Morrow County. Sometime after the War he moved to Point Reyes, California and was employed as a dairyman. He continued farming when he moved to Seaside, California.  The 1900 California census notes that Sylvanus owned a mine. He died in San Francisco, California.
