According to his obituary in the McGregor, Iowa News, he was shot through the hand at the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia in September, 1863. He was discharged from the service on July 20, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

Born in Scotland, Thomas Edgar was living in Knox County, Ohio in 1850. In 1860 he resided in Cardington, Morrow County. By 1869, he had moved to Davenport, Iowa, later moving to McGregor in that same state. He was mayor of McGregor when he died. His death was attributed to a chest injury sustained when he was thrown from a buggy after an axle broke. He died one year after that accident. His wife’s name was Malinda Valandigham.
