Soldier: Samuel Kain (listed on monument as Sam’l Kane)
Regiment: 31st. OVI Company: E
Age: 39 Date Entering Service: August 27, 1861 (Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio)
Period of Service: 3 years
Remarks (When discharged, re-enlisted, wounded, captured, died of disease or killed):
There is no record of his discharge. He did survive the war. When he enlisted he had several children. It would be very likely that he left the service early for some sort of disability reason, but again, there is no record of that.
Battles in which he fought:
The 31st. OVI fought in numerous battles in the western theater. However, as there is no record of Kain’s mustering out, a listing of battles would only be an assumption.
Other interesting information discovered:
Kain was born in Pennsylvania. He lived in Morrow County from the 1850’s through the 1860’s. By 1870 he, his wife Louisa and their 10 children were living in New Haven, Indiana.
Date of Death: January 8, 1905 Place of burial: 100F Cemetery, New Haven, Ind.
