Atchison was on active duty in New Mexico Territory when the war broke out.  Eventually he served in the midwestern states of Missouri and Arkansas.

Other interesting information discovered:  Regiment lost during service 2 Officers and 30 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 105 Enlisted men by disease. Total 140.  Atchison was a bugler.
