First enrolled in 3rd. OVI, Co. I; mustered out Aug.22, 1861. He then enlisted in the 96th. OVI two years later. He was accidentally wounded by the explosion of the steamboat “City of Madison” at Vicksburg, Miss, on August 20, 1863 while in line of duty; discharged June 9, 1864 at Columbus, Ohio on Surgeon’s certificate of disability.

Ferris lived in Delaware county and then moved to Cardington. He was a blacksmith by trade. He married Matilada Nichols in Morrow County in 1853. He applied for an invalid’s pension in 1864, and then his wife applied for a widow’s pension on July 18, 1881. His son, George then applied for a minor’s pension after his mother’s death. Ferris died at Empire, Kansas.
