Discharged on February 14, 1863 at Gallitin, Tennessee, on a surgeon’s certificate of disability.  According to one source, he fell ill after the battle of Stone River, and never recovered.

Other interesting information discovered:

Layman Fowler was born at Mt. Hope, Holmes County, Ohio on January 1, 1832.  In 1850 he resided at Sandyville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  He eventually moved west, showing up in Fresno, California in 1880, and then San Diego by 1910.  He died at Los Angeles.  He was a carpenter by trade.

Date of Death:  August 16, 1910            

Place of burial:  Los Aneles National Cemetery, Los  Angeles, CA.
