The 85th OVI was organized at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio between May and June 1862 to guard a large number of prisoners. Soldiers mustered out between September 23 and September 27, 1862 at expiration of service.

Johnston Maxwell was born in Morrow County 4/26/1844. Johnston’s older brother, Melville Maxwell served in the 3rd OVI, Company I. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Nancy Jane Stanton on 5/29/1862 in Morrow County. Johnston married Viola A Scribner on 12/19/1869 in Morrow County. Johnston reportedly had three children. He collected an invalid’s pension on 4/11/1891. Johnston was a cattle broker, horse dealer and farmer while living in the Cardington, Ohio area. He spent winters in Florida as he grew older. The 1920 census reported his residence on S Marion Street in Cardington. Johnston spet time in a sanitarium in Kansas City, Missouri and did benefit from treatments for an unknown serious trouble. He died in Kansas City, Missouri on 3/1/1927.
