This Regiment was originally organized of a Battalion of four Companies organized at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio from September 24 to October 27, 1862, to serve three years and designated, “First Battalion Governors Guards”.
Six new Companies were organized at Camp Chase from July 24 to August 3, 1863 and consolidated with this Battalion to serve three years and designated the 88th Ohio Volunteers. It mustered out of service July 3, 1865.
This Regiment was principally engaged in guarding Rebel prisoners at Camp Chase. It was also engaged in the pursuit of the Morgan’s Raiders and the suppression of the Holmes County Rebellion July 1863.

William Henry Poorman was born on 7/12/1827 in Morrow County, Ohio. He was married twice. On 5/6/1849 he married Loretta Bowyer in Morrow County. Loretta died in 1890. William then married Susan Scribner Newberry on 9/24/1891 in Morrow County. William had seven children. William lived and farmed in the Cardington, Ohio area all of his life. He collected an invalid’s pension on 7/14/1890. His wife, Susan collected a widow’s pension on 11/21/1906.
