The 136th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio on 5/13/1864 to serve 100days. Composed of four companies of the 62nd Battalion Ohio National Guard from Union County, fire companies of the 56th Battalion from Morrow County, three companies of the 6th Battalion from Crawford County and one company from the 89th Battalion of Marion County. They left Camp Chase on 5/13/1864 for Washington City, placed on garrison duty at Forts Ellsworth, Williams and North as part of the defense of Washington south of the Potomac. zThey remained on garrison duty until the term of service expired. Mustered out on 8/30/1864.

Other interesting information discovered:

George W Smith was born on 4/6/1864 in Marion, Ohio. He married Harriet E Rogers on 2/5/1867, seven children were born of this union. George lived in Cardington on Third and Nicholas Streets during his lifetime. He was employed as a painter.  There was no information found regarding the surgeon’s certificate of disability. No Pension information was found.
