Joel Blue was promoted from sergeant to 2nd. Lieutenant on January 21, 1862, and then to 1st. Lieutenant on October 8, 1862. He was elevated to the rank of Captain following the deaths of Captains James St. John and Henry Cunard, who were both killed on October 8, 1862 at the battle of Perryville, Kentucky. He was taken prisoner at Rome, Ga. on May 2, 1863, and was confined at Macon Georgia and Columbia, SC before being paroled. He was finally discharged from the army on Feb. 20, 1865.
