John P. Demuth was born in Salt Creek, Ohio on 2/27/1847 to the union of Samuel and Harriet Demuth. He lived in the Cardington, Ohio area as a young boy. His older brother, Robert B Demuth served in the 96th OVI and 4th Cavalry. Robert also died during service on 2/7/1863 at Jefferson Barracks, St Louis, Missouri.
